MSP tries not to get all political or righteous. I like to leave the debates to the people who have either the brains to know what they're arguing about or the time not to care if they don't. But periodically I find myself drawn into internal debates simply by the nature of what I do. Yesterday was one of those times.
I am a photographer. It is my job to capture stuff. I have chosen to use my skill with a camera to capture people in love and I make no distinction about that concept. But I am not naive. And I am sadly aware that some people, even people I actually may call "friend", that do make a distinction. I couldn't help but look around me yesterday as I was shooting two of my nearest and dearest on the occasion of their literal engagement and wonder if there were others bearing witness that might be in the latter of these categories. And the more love I captured as I watched Whitney propose to Julia the more the thought nagged me. Would someone come along and ruin this moment for them? Would someone dare break the magic? Today's climate would suggest that people are less and less inclined to keep their uglier opinions to themselves and we seem to be warping into a society that, while marginally accepting, is more apt than ever to step out from behind keyboards and spew hatred openly for all to hear. Even in the face of obvious joy.
I needn't have worried.
Every person we saw had a smile to give or a congratulatory word or kind gesture to offer. One lady even demanded to jump in on a pic. And I internally shelved my debate. Because it didn't matter. LOVE IS LOVE. And these two people represent that idea better than any two people I know. They revel in it. They rejoice in it. They hold it close and dear and celebrate it openly for the world to see. And damn it if that doesn't just conquer all.
So, congrats from the bottom of my cynical, doubting, little heart you gorgeous girls. Your love is infectious and touches anyone who sees you together, and it was truly an honor to be there with you yesterday. May your future be as bold and bright as you are!
